Societal Decay

Societal decay is the overarching theme of A Mind Forever Voyaging. The game does not tell a story of sudden catastrophe — no nuclear war, no alien invasion. It depicts the slow, grinding deterioration of every system that sustains civil society: government, economy, environment, justice, education, infrastructure, public health, and human decency itself. The SCORE table in prism.zil is the definitive catalog of this decline, 135 items tracking the collapse across five decades.

Government

The decay of democratic governance is visible from within City Hall itself. In 2041, a government official “cheerily comments on how well things in the city are running, and how rewarding his job has been lately” (rockvil.zil, GOVERNMENT-OFFICIAL-F). By any year after 2041, the same official “grumpily complains that most of his department has been laid off as city services are cut back” — and then rushes away, frightened (score item 136, 2 points).

By 2071, City Hall itself is “crumbling” (score item 11, 1 point). The interior is “decrepit; it looks as though no maintenance has been performed here for years.” The government has hollowed out, replaced by the parallel authority of the Church and the security apparatus of the BSF.

Economy

Rockvil’s economy follows a trajectory from middle-class prosperity to feudal inequality:

  • 2041: Dunbar’s is an “upscale” department store, “crowded despite its rather steep prices.” The economy supports a writer (Perry) and an artist (Jill) with a child.
  • 2051: Dunbar’s is “swank,” an “elegant boutique with a wealthy clientele.” The skycar factory operates at “just over half capacity” (score item 109).
  • 2061: Dunbar’s is “very swank,” “catering exclusively to the wealthy elite.” The fast food place “no longer serves beef products” (score item 73). Foodvilles are “sparsely stocked” (score item 18). The skycar factory operates at “less than half capacity” (score item 110). Jill’s painting of a “beggar woman, her face a mask of suffering” in brown and gray reflects the economic mood.
  • 2071: Dunbar’s requires an appointment; guards scrutinize visitors. Food is rationed (score item 19, 4 points). The skycar factory operates at “a fraction of capacity” (score item 111). The skybus system has been shut down after a failed privatization experiment (score item 12, 2 points). The Water Tower is “decrepit” (score item 132). The only bank in Rockvil is owned by the Church (score item 83).
  • 2081: Foodville is looted (score item 39). Perry is “so hungry you consider eating mold” (score item 40). The economy has collapsed entirely.

Environment

The natural world sickens in parallel with society:

  • 2051: The river is “polluted” (score item 132, 1 point). “Wastes dumped into river without processing” (score item 104). Coal-burners supplement fusion reactors (score item 105). The forests visible from the apartment window are “thinner and browner each year” from acidic rain (apartment.zil, APARTMENT-WINDOW-F).
  • 2061: The duck pond is “dried-up” (score item 66). The statue of Halley is “missing and pedestal defaced” (score item 67). The water tower is “corroding” (score item 130). The river is “very polluted” (score item 133). The view shows strip mining — “a forest of thriving mining towers, which trundle across the landscape leaving ugly brown scars.” The sky is “gray and smoggy” (score item 118).
  • 2071: The river is “incredibly polluted” (score item 134) and “on fire as usual” (score item 108). Coal-burners “belch black ash” (score item 107), providing half the power. The apartment window is “etched with pollution” (score item 4, 2 points). Many species are extinct (score item 68, 5 points). The aquarium “smells of dead fish” (score item 136, 2 points).

Justice and State Violence

The criminal justice system evolves from flawed to monstrous:

  • 2051: The jail is “very overcrowded and unsanitary” (score item 75). Death penalty for attempted rape (score item 14, 2 points).
  • 2061: Capital punishment for “most crimes” (score item 76, 3 points). Public execution begins (score item 78, 4 points).
  • 2071: Capital punishment for “all crimes” (score item 77, 4 points). Execution for cheating on food allowance (score item 17, 8 points). “Enthusiastic crowds at Execution Matches” (score item 79, 8 points). Shot by drunken cops for curfew violation (score item 117, 8 points). Police club “screaming women senseless” (score item 35, 6 points). Police shoot an old woman in an alley (score item 27, 7 points).

The curfew (score item 116, 2 points throughout 2051-2071) is enforced by police who arrest violators and throw them in jail cells. In 2071, violating curfew can mean being shot by a “fat, leering officer” who “smells of beer” (I-CURFEW in interrupts.zil).

Civil Society and Culture

Every institution of civil society is dismantled:

  • Education: The public school system is shut down (score item 82, 5 points). Schoolchildren stone Perry (score item 81, 7 points). Rockvil University is closed (score item 63).
  • Media: “Very few newspapers in existence” (score item 86, 2 points). Films progress from “insipid” (2051) to “sex and violence and hate” (2061) to “Church propaganda” (2071).
  • Arts and culture: Symphony Hall closed (score item 96). Halley Museum closed (score item 62). Railroad Museum closed (score item 90). Library has a list of banned titles (score item 121, 6 points). Bookstore closed (score item 113).
  • Public spaces: Kennedy Park is a construction site (score item 13, 2 points), then luxury townhouses (2071). Halley Park becomes “estates for wealthy” (score item 61). Riverside Park is “restricted” (score item 92).

Infrastructure

The physical infrastructure of the city disintegrates:

  • Elevators broken (score item 3)
  • The Tube shut down (score item 31)
  • Skybus closed after failed privatization (score item 12)
  • Spaceport closed (score item 99)
  • Water tower decaying from corroded (2061) to decrepit (2071)
  • Skycar factory at ever-diminishing capacity

Public Health

  • Hospital “caters to the wealthy” (score item 24, 2061)
  • Hospital “refuses to admit dying patient” (score item 25, 2071)
  • Health Center falls from “bucking the trend to care for the poor” (2051) to “fallen on hard times” (2061) to “substandard serf housing” (2071) — score items 50-52

Violence and Human Degradation

Beyond state violence, interpersonal violence escalates:

  • Police “casually beating up black youth” (score item 91, 5 points, 2061)
  • Wealthy couple’s bodyguards “beat beggar senseless” (score item 56, 4 points, 2071)
  • Children torturing animals (score item 70, 2061), escalating to “organized torturing of monkeys” (score item 69, 2071)
  • Mugging, “any year with increasing likelihood” (score item 125)
  • In 2081: gangs, wild dogs, cannibalism (score items 36, 38, 45, 111)

The Pattern

The decay is not random. It follows a consistent ideological logic: deregulation → inequality → privatization of public goods → collapse of services → authoritarian response → theocratic capture → totalitarian violence. Each decade escalates. Each system’s failure reinforces the others. The apartment raid scenes — BSF officers storming in with rifles, Rad-Detectors sweeping, officers tearing curtains — make the political personal: the state enters your home.
